Poria cocos grows on the roots of various conifers, mainly pines. Its appearance resembles that of a coconut, which is certainly where its colloquial name as coconut mushroom comes from.

Another name is Indian Bread or – in English – Indian Bread. It owes this name to the American Indians, who used it as food and baked a kind of bread from the Poria cocos.

This medicinal mushroom is best suited for long-term use. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used in many herbal mixtures under the name Fu Ling. In addition to ergosterol, a precursor of vitamin D2, it also contains various triterpenes and a variety of valuable polysaccharides, including poriatin, which has a diuretic effect.

The Poria cocos is used in diseases of the lungs, as well as heart, liver and kidney diseases to eliminate moisture.

Poria cocos - often used in older animals.

It is an excellent spleen tonic and thus a valuable vital mushroom for spleen weakness. This is significant because the spleen is one of the most important defense organs and an essential part of the immune system. In veterinary medicine, especially chronically ill, older animals benefit from this mushroom, especially if you suffer from loss of appetite, diarrhea or fatigue.

However, the spleen is not only an organ with physical function; it is also the organ of relationship. Negative feelings such as anxiety or melancholy weaken this important organ and thus promote further illnesses. Due to its spleen-strengthening effect, this vital mushroom is especially suitable for nervous and restless animals. In addition, it also has a blood sugar lowering effect.
