Medicinal mushrooms - health from nature

Medicinal mushrooms have a long tradition in many cultures around the world. Here we would like to present 14 medicinally effective mushrooms with their effects and possible applications.

For mushroom powders there are many suppliers

You will find trustworthy suppliers with controlled organic cultivation in Germany, but unfortunately also less recommendable importers of cheap goods. Read what is important when buying.

The most important information about medicinal mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are also called vital mushrooms and medicinal mushrooms. They possess well-researched, scientifically proven active ingredients that we can use to maintain health and, above all, for the accompanying therapy of diseases. Among other things, they stimulate the body’s self-healing powers. This immune strengthening is helpful in many diseases and is often the crucial point for full recovery.

Watch our video about mycotherapy!

Mycotherapy (fungal medicine) is one of the oldest natural healing methods in the world. Its origin lies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, medicinal mushrooms such as reishi, shiitake or maitake have already proven their worth for centuries both in preventive health care and in the treatment of a variety of diseases. Even in cancer, medicinal mushrooms are a valuable supportive aid, as shown by practical experience, but also by a large number of international studies.

Medicinal mushrooms for prophylaxis and therapy

Especially in the mushroom powder from the whole mushroom are thousands of ingredients. These include glycoproteins, triterpenes, adenosines, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and, above all, the very important enzymes and many other ingredients. They all have an influence on the human organism. The fantastic thing is that they support each other in their effect.

This means that the individual valuable ingredients of the whole medicinal mushrooms work as a compound. On the one hand, they stimulate certain metabolic reactions in the organism; on the other hand, they inhibit certain processes. This is a meaningful and balanced occurrence that allows us to take full advantage of nature’s intelligence for our well-being. Vital mushrooms have a balancing and regulating effect.

Strengthening the immune system

For example, if our body is exhausted or burdened with stimulants and environmental toxins, the immune system works slowly and rather sluggishly. In studies on cancer patients, for example, it has been shown that taking medicinal mushroom powder made from the whole mushroom reactivates the immune cells. A healthy immune system, on the other hand, is not “overactivated” by the fungi. If, on the other hand, it reacts to completely harmless substances, such as in the case of allergies, then the vital mushrooms ensure the down-regulation of this “excessive” immune reaction. This means that medicinal mushroom powder from the whole mushroom is adaptogenic, that is, balancing and regulating, and therefore brings the immune system back into balance.

Medicinal mushrooms detoxify the body

When using medicinal mushrooms for therapeutic purposes, it is essential to ensure that only the best quality products are used. Because mushroom powder from the whole mushroom, due to its high enzyme content, is able to break down toxins in the body and make them excretory. For this reason, the mushrooms should come exclusively from BIO-certified cultivation in Germany. This ensures that there are no toxins or pollutants in the mushrooms to be used. These uncontaminated fungi then act as a catalyst and extract the toxins from the body. In detoxification, especially the enzymes, which are abundant in the mushroom powder from the whole mushroom, are crucial.

That is why the use of the powder from the whole mushroom is so important to us. In order to preserve as many valuable ingredients as possible in a mushroom powder preparation, a freshly harvested and gentle drying at up to a maximum of 40° C is the prerequisite. This ensures that the heat-labile ingredients of the medicinal mushrooms – such as enzymes and proteins – are also preserved!

EXPERIENCE REPORTS
"After 80 chemotherapies, I was again diagnosed with two tumors. I was given up by conventional medicine. That's when I learned about the healing properties of mushrooms and grasped at the last straw. Today I am tumor-free and cured of cancer."

Particularly effective - triterpenes and glycoproteins

Triterpenes are among the most effective ingredients of medicinal mushrooms. They are found predominantly in the fruiting body and mainly in the lamellae and spores of the mature mushroom cap. The spectrum of action of triterpenes is very broad. They can have anticarcinogenic, antiviral, antibacterial, fungicidal and antioxidant effects. Triterpenes include molecules such as steroids, vitamin D, and bile acids. Glycoproteins are high molecular weight and complex molecules composed of ß-glycans (polysaccharides) and proteins. The effect of glycoproteinis higher than the sole effect of ß-glycan. The glycoproteins have immunomodulatory and antitumor activity.

The right enzymes for a healthy body

Basically, almost all life processes are due to enzyme reactions. Thus, they play an important role in cellular respiration and promote our vital energy. Figuratively speaking, one could even say that they are the spark or hub of life. There are enzymes that the body can produce itself and enzymes that must be ingested with food.

In total, the various metabolic processes are influenced by over 5,000 different enzymes and the vitamins and minerals that support them. Mushrooms are generally very rich in enzymes. In the case of powder from the whole mushroom, which has been gently dried, the enzymes contained in the whole mushrooms remain intact. Enzymes are biocatalysts that are extremely heat labile and are completely destroyed at temperatures as low as 40° C.

The enzymes of the fungi are on the one hand antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) and laccase. Furthermore, enzymes involved in the suppression of cell proliferation (glucose-2-oxidase and protease) and enzymes involved in the detoxification of the organism (peroxidases, monoxygenases, dehydrogenases and reductases).

Whenever an enzyme system in the body is missing or has become disordered, the metabolism gets out of balance. While the blood of healthy people is rich in enzymes, diseases lead to a lack of them. Cancer patients usually have by far the lowest enzyme content in their blood.

The detoxifying effect of medicinal mushrooms

We know from fungi that they can break down toxins, change their structure and therefore convert them into a form that can be excreted. Mushrooms are very rich in enzymes and possess – and this is unique – not only the enzymes necessary for phase I, but also for phase II of detoxification. In phase I, the toxins are decomposed, producing a great many free radicals. However, due to their antioxidant effect, the fungi can intercept the harmful effect of these free radicals.

Only with the enzymes of phase II are the digested toxins then transformed into an excretory and thus harmless form. A detoxification process is also constantly taking place in our organism. Especially in stressful situations and during an illness, however, this process runs at full speed. The medicinal mushroom powder from the whole mushroom supports the organism with various enzymes that boost the detoxification process. In addition, the ingredients of the whole mushrooms stimulate the body’s detoxification systems.

Medicinal mushroom powder from the whole mushroom

Mushroom powder from the whole mushroom is rich in minerals and trace elements; probably it contains every mineral of its growth substrate. Therefore, it is very important on what substrate the mushrooms are grown. Potassium and phosphorus are found in large quantities and calcium and iron in small quantities, as well as trace elements such as copper and, above all, selenium. Mushrooms are also rich in vitamins. Especially the group of B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) should be emphasized. Vitamins D and E are also contained in the mushrooms. Some mushrooms also contain vitamins A and C; however, only in small amounts. We need these different vitamins to support our enzymes.

Medicinal mushrooms contain valuable chitin

Another interesting ingredient in whole mushroom powder is chitin, a ubiquitous polysaccharide found in fungi, insects, and parasites. To degrade chitin, the human organism has evolved the enzyme chitinase, which is found in activated macrophages. Macrophages respond to chitin as they would to a pathogen. Therefore, chitin exerts a stimulating as well as training effect on our immune system to better fight parasites. At the same time, chitin reduces fat absorption in the intestine and is therefore helpful for a slim line.

Chitin also causes less cholesterol to be absorbed through the intestines, which also helps to lower cholesterol. The chitin in mushrooms also contains glucosamine. Glucosamine is the basic building material for cartilage, tendons, ligaments and bone structures. It is needed in the body to repair and rebuild damaged cartilage in the joints and spine, protects the joints and has a positive effect on the maintenance of mobile joints.

Chitin is broken down by the enzyme chitinase and converted to N-acetylglucosamine. In young and healthy people, the body itself produces enough glucosamine to keep the joints functional. In older people, glucosamine is no longer produced in sufficient quantities and should be supplied daily. Chitin has a very large surface area and is therefore able to absorb and excrete even radioactivity. Chitin is therefore very valuable for our well-being.
