Nowadays, our pets live in a close family relationship with humans. They are family members, friends and companions. If our pet falls ill with cancer, this diagnosis hits us all the harder, as it is inevitably associated with the death of the beloved animal.
Often the disease is detected quite late, the pet owner is under pressure as the veterinarian recommends quick action. However, despite the horror of the diagnosis, there should be enough time to weigh the risks and benefits of a recommended treatment.
Many questions should be considered: Is a biopsy really necessary? What does the “certainty” of diagnosis change and does this outweigh the risk of metastasis? Can the animal really be expected to undergo chemotherapy with the associated side effects and what are the chances of success of this form of treatment? In the animal, maintaining or restoring a good quality of life is paramount.

Development of cancer in animals
Cancer does not develop overnight, but possibly over a period of years. In humans, it takes about six years from the degeneration of the first cell to the development of a microtumor. Every day the animal body produces millions of new cells and every day some cells degenerate. Whether a cancer develops from these degenerated cells depends on a myriad of different factors.
Chemical substances (tobacco smoke, feed additives, mold toxins), viruses, radiation exposure (UV rays, X-rays), feeding inappropriate to the species and also antibiotics promote cancer. However, the animal body has several emergency systems to protect itself from cancer. Only when all these systems fail can a cancer develop from a damaged cell under unfavorable conditions.
A cancer cell grows uncontrollably and multiplies faster than normal cells. Tumor cells induce vascular cells to remake blood vessels to bring nutrients important for tumor growth to the tumor. They can penetrate blood or lymph channels and continue to multiply elsewhere, resulting in metastasis.
What promotes cancer growth in animals
Inflammation promotes cancer growth. Inflammatory reactions release many growth factors to accelerate necessary repair processes. These are used by the cancer cell for growth. For this reason, tumors prefer to occur in inflammatory tissue. The cancer cell differs significantly in its metabolic processes from that of a normal cell.
Cancer cells are dependent on glucose, they have a very high glucose demand. Deprivation of glucose makes cancer cells susceptible to therapies and can cause older cancer cells to die. In tumor patients, the surrounding tissue is overacidified due to levorotatory lactic acid. This necessitates a supply of dextrorotatory lactic acid to regulate the pH.
At the latest with the diagnosis of cancer, the diet of the animal should be strictly species-specific. For carnivores such as the dog and cat, this means grain- and starch-free feeding, with no rapidly utilizable carbohydrates. Sugar and carbohydrates feed the tumor.

Vital mushrooms in animals with cancer
ABM is an important mushroom in the naturopathic treatment of cancer. It can suppress the formation of new blood vessels from existing blood vessels (angiogenesis) so that the tumor can no longer be supplied with sufficient nutrients. It can also induce the voluntary suicide of tumor cells (apoptosis). It also has a regulating effect on the immune system so that abnormal cells can be better recognized and destroyed.
Maitake can inhibit tumor growth and the formation of metastases. Like ABM, it promotes the voluntary cell death of tumor cells and helps to strengthen the cellular immune system.
Coriolus is a valuable medicinal mushroom for the prevention of cancer. It can reduce the formation of blood vessels, supports the voluntary suicide program of tumor cells, counteracts the spread of cancer cells and can strengthen the cellular immune system. The use of Coriolus has proven successful for hormone-dependent tumors, among other things.
The additional administration of the antioxidant OPC is recommended during cancer therapy, as OPC has a strong anti-inflammatory effect and protects healthy cells from degenerating into cancer cells.
Treatment of cancer should be individualized and based on the severity of the disease. It is to be adapted to the condition of the individual animal and any additional conventional medical treatment methods that may be carried out.
