Allergy in dogs - how can I help my pet with vital mushrooms

Vital mushrooms against the allergic symptoms

Petra Remsing – veterinary practitioner

As with us humans, the number of allergy sufferers among our pets and large animals has increased significantly in recent years. The reasons for this are increasing environmental pollution, allergenic substances in feed and medicines, chemicals in cleaning agents and detergents, and much more.

In general, any substance can be an allergen. Allergic reactions are triggered in the allergic person by substances from the environment that do not cause reactions in the non-allergic person, i.e. the healthy animal. These foreign substances are called allergens or antigens. Contact with an allergen occurs through the skin, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, ingestion or injection.

Any animal can develop an allergy

The picture of allergy can be very diverse. It manifests itself in pronounced skin problems, therapy-resistant ear infections, gastrointestinal disorders (vomiting, diarrhea and flatulence) or bronchitis that does not heal. In the medical sense, an allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction of the organism to substances from the environment. The body’s natural protective response against intruders has gotten out of control and is functioning incorrectly. The immune system is no longer able to distinguish between harmful and harmless substances. The body defends itself against harmless substances with a defense reaction. Basically it is true for allergies that there is often a hereditary disposition, but in principle every animal can become allergic. The prerequisite for the occurrence of an allergy is always a disturbed regulation of the immune system.

Connection between intestine and immune system

About 80 percent of the immune system is assigned to the intestine. It protects the organism from pathogens and degenerated cells. The intestinal flora becomes unbalanced due to bacteria, incorrect, inappropriate nutrition, toxins, drugs or worming. Good germs are damaged and bad ones spread. Pollutants can no longer be adequately repelled. The intestinal wall becomes more permeable and inflammatory changes and toxic metabolic products develop. Flatulence, belching, intestinal cramps and foul-smelling, greasy stools are the first signs of a weakened and disturbed intestinal flora. If the intestine is weakened, the immune system loses strength and excessive defense reactions occur, i.e. allergies.

The most common types of allergies in our animals include:

  • atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema)
  • Flea saliva allergy
  • Feed allergy / intolerances
  • Food mite allergy
  • Dust mite allergy
  • Pollen allergy
  • Mold allergy
With some allergens, contact can be avoided, but unfortunately not with other allergens – such as dust mite or pollen allergy. In these cases, the use of medicinal mushrooms provides symptom relief and a good quality of life to animals with ailments.

Important vital mushrooms for allergies are Reishi and Hericium

Reishi reduces histamine release, which has a beneficial effect on allergic reactions. Its cortisone-like action relieves inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes. It strengthens the lungs and heart, thus has a positive effect on the oxygen supply to the body, which is important in allergic asthma. Hericium promotes the build-up of the intestinal mucosa, so that allergy-causing substances from food cannot pass the intestinal wall so easily. This is especially helpful in atopic dermatitis and food allergies. Polyporus shows good effect in weakened lymphatic system, is helpful in contact allergies and atopic eczema. Pleurotus promotes colonization of the gastrointestinal mucosa with probiotic bacterial cultures, which is beneficial after antibiotic therapy.
