Traditional Chinese Medicine

March 8, 2022
Dr. Dorothee Bös et al.

In Europe, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has only been known since about the middle of the 20th century. However, the various healing methods of TCM are based on centuries-old experiences and principles.

TCM has its origins in the Stone Age, when various natural remedies and acupuncture were already used. The five elements doctrine (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) is rooted in the teachings of Confucius. Medicinal therapy plays the largest role in TCM, accounting for about 80 percent of applications. The basis of drug therapy according to TCM are natural substances with certain properties.

Medicinal mushrooms as part of TCM

Among the highest quality and most effective groups of medicines in traditional Chinese medicine are medicinal mushrooms, which are synonymously called vital mushrooms or medicinally effective mushrooms. Already in the classification of the approximately 2,000 year old Chinese pharmacopoeia “Shen Long Ben Tsao” all herbs known at that time are classified and divided into groups. The highest quality group – also known as “God’s herbs” – includes ginseng and the medicinal mushroom reishi. Within this group, the reishi is even placed in the top position as the “king of medicinal plants” above all other plants.

Example vital mushroom Reishi

Reishi, which is extremely rare in the wild and could not be cultivated until about 1970, was considered so valuable that Chinese emperors even sent expeditions in search of it and built temples for it. They hoped that the wizards in the Chinese mountains would deposit the precious reishi mushrooms there in gratitude for the construction of the temples. By the way, the Reishi is also said to prolong life or even provide immortality. Therefore, it also bears the name “mushroom of eternal life”.

From TCM to mycotherapy

In the meantime, TCM – of course with somewhat less dramatic statements – is also more than recognized in the West as a classical healing method. Especially in mycotherapy (mushroom medicine), by means of many international studies, its effectiveness in preventive health care and in many diseases and ailments has been proven.

The Ötzi find

Not least the spectacular Ötzi find proves that medicinal mushrooms were also highly valued in Europe in earlier times. After all, “Ötzi” already had a relative of the Coriolus versicolor (German: Schmetterlingstramete) in his medicine chest 5,200 years ago. This medicinal mushroom, used for generations in East Asia, supports, among other things, the defense system in the fight against viruses and bacteria. Thus, Traditional Chinese Medicine could rightly be called universal natural medicine.
