Diabetes in dog, cat and horse

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder.

In animals, too, a distinction is made between so-called type I and type II diabetes.

Dogs and diabetes

Dogs usually develop type I diabetes, in which the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas are damaged or destroyed. Affected animals suffer from a lack of insulin, which is produced in the pancreas. Due to the lack of this hormone, the cells do not get enough energy, although there is enough sugar in the blood.

The body tries to compensate for the lack of energy in the cells by breaking down body fat and muscle (protein). This leads to an accumulation of toxic metabolites in the excretory organs. In affected animals, emaciation, weakness, poor wound healing, and progressive lens opacification occur despite the presence of appetite.

In type I diabetes, the administration of Coprinus is recommended. This medicinal mushroom has a protective effect on the insulin-producing ß-cells of the pancreas. The vanadium contained in Coprinus, taken as mushroom powder from the whole mushroom, has an insulin-like effect.

Agaricus blazei murrill (ABM) regulates the immune system, strengthens the pancreas and spleen. To support the excretory organs and strengthen kidney function, the administration of Cordyceps is recommended, and to strengthen the lungs and liver, Reishi.

Diabetes in cats

Cats usually develop type II diabetes, which is caused by obesity and chronic lack of exercise. Most cat foods contain too much carbohydrate, which promotes obesity and diabetes. After feeding, the sugar level rises too quickly and more insulin is released by the pancreas.

The cells try to protect themselves from sugar overfeeding and, as a protection against cell damage, only allow as much sugar into the cells as they can burn. If there is an excess of sugar, no more sugar reaches the cells, even though there is enough insulin in the blood. In conventional medicine, this is called insulin resistance. If the amount of glucose ingested is higher than required by the organism, the residual glucose is converted to fat in the liver and stored in the liver and later as body fat.

Diabetic cats suffer from strong appetite, listlessness and are prone to infectious diseases and bladder infections. Typical secondary diseases in cats are vascular calcification, circulatory disorders and chronic kidney failure. Therapy includes a consistent change of feed. Together with the administration of medicinal mushrooms, a normalization of the blood sugar level is thus achieved, so that insulin administration becomes unnecessary in the long term.

The bioactive polysaccharides of Coprinus achieve a strong blood sugar lowering effect. The vanadium contained in Coprinus, taken as mushroom powder from the whole mushroom, has an insulin-like effect. In type II diabetes, Coprinus should be taken together with Maitake. Taking Maitake improves fat burning and helps to eliminate the disorders of fat metabolism in the liver and break down fat.

Horses

Like the cat, the horse also suffers from type II diabetes, equine metabolic syndrome. In addition to obesity and lack of exercise, Equine Cushing’s Syndrome is a possible cause in horses. One of the most common symptoms of metabolic syndrome in horses is laminitis. In Equine Metabolic Syndrome, as in type II diabetes, Maitake is given in addition to Coprinus .

If laminitis already exists, Auricularia promotes blood flow to the hoof corium during laminitis. It improves the oxygenation and fluidity of the blood and strengthens the vessels. Reishi has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Like Auricularia, it improves oxygenation and has a cortisone-like effect.
